How to play #4: technique

I have spent my life grappling with and exploring guitar technique. It’s fascinating, and it can get unnecessarily complicated.

Here are a few basic guidelines that I hope will make it simpler for you.

Whatever you do technically should be relaxed, cause no pain or discomfort, and enable you to get a sound from your instrument that pleases you. You should be able to play notes in rhythm with ease.

Dizzy Gillespie once said “If it feels stiff, I discard it.” That’s a pretty good thing to remember!

The perfect solution for someone else may not be a good fit for you, so in this regard I suggest your very own “independent investigation of the truth.”

By all means try what teachers show you, and be willing to sit with something new for a while to test it out. New things that take you out of your comfort zone will feel weird. But, in the end, you must remain honest with yourself as to what feels right and what works for you.

However you choose to play should feel like a “yes” to you.

Allow the music to guide your technique rather than have the technique guide your music. It sounds overly simple, but that wisdom is tried and true.

I’ve made numerous technique changes over the years, and it’s always due to letting go of a head-based technical idea and allowing a new concept, groove, or tone to express itself.
